During the session Intelligent Networked Logistics: the AEOLIX Digital Ecosystem, several experts in the field of the intelligent logistics discussed different aspects of the AEOLIX project and challenges within the AEOLIX platform.

Evangelos Mitsakis (CERTH-HIT) was the first of the speakers to address the AEOLIX challenges for the next future, taking into account the different innovation areas bound to be established by AEOLIX from the point of view of the interoperability, technical and legal issues and business models. As the aim of the AEOLIX platform is to establish a multi/synchro-modal transport, as well as intelligent hubs and a network optimisation and the size and kind of data collected in AEOLIX are unequal, a proper management for the collection of data and principles and categories for opening these data are needed.

A more technical vision of the future of the AEOLIX platform was given by Javier García, from ATOS, paying attention to the main issues AEOLIX currently addresses, such as the lack of interconnection of systems and data related issues, such us ownership, sharing, access, protection and cybersecurity of data. AEOLIX aims at building a cloud-based architecture to make the information flow through data transformation via data digitalisation processes. Regarding the AEOLIX development plan, Javier emphasised the need of the provision of connectivity of the AEOLIX services, being before identified in the connectivity engine and the definition of a common skeleton between partners throughout the AEOLIX Platform in order to handle its governance.


Florian Krietsh (PTV) stressed the need for connectivity in order to face the challenges of IT systems, and to establish service interoperability. For this, the AEOLIX toolkit is able to receive services and functionalities and it provides support tools from the AEOLIX connectivity layer. Given in a scalable performance, the toolkit can be used in any cluster providing the determination of ETA (constantly updated data), collection and linking of existing services for the toolkit and configuration of channels of the AEOLIX connectivity layer.


Nik Delmeire, representing the European Shippers’ Council, made an exposition about how the information channels are changing, to take into account the way AEOLIX platform should be managed and developed. As the corridor information system is becoming “paperless”, all the current documents have to change to e-documents and be adopted and accepted by all member states. Given the huge number of available IT-tools, this would facilitate a better operation planning and simplification of complex processes, taking out the current uncertainties in the supply chain.


Ralf Willenbrock, from T-SYSTEMS, gave an example of the Living Lab 1, aimed at the re-alignment of sea-air freight-oriented supply chain operations in the Port of Hamburg and the airport of Frankfurt, a fully intermodal pilot where AEOLIX services can facilitate the flow of the information needed in order to manage the tour order. It is needed to know what is important for shippers, but also from the point of view of the infrastructure. Using the App for intelligent devices, the terminal provides information to the railway operator or forwarder about the availability of the container, ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), allowing for messaging as well.
