An IRU delegation led by IRU President Christian Labrot at a constructive meeting with Henrik Hololei, Director General of DG MOVE, addressed a number of key issues of interest for Europe and the road transport industry. In particular the impact of the refugee crisis on commercial freight and passenger transport and the content of the upcoming European Commission Road Initiatives featured significantly in discussions.

The IRU delegation highlighted the innovation in the industry that IRU is leading, in particular the Commercial Vehicle of the Future and IRU’s UpTop global taxi network. IRU’s call to double the use of collective passenger transport was also reiterated as well as the need to see the taxi sector governed by the principle of ‘same business, same rules’.

TIR expansion in Asia and how Europe could maximise the benefit from expanded overland trade routes resulting from this were also discussed with a recognition that more needed to be done to ensure these trade routes’ full potential.
