Madrid will extend the age limit of its youth travel pass to cover young people up to the age of 26.

This means that from October over half a million young people in Madrid will be able to travel on the city’s entire public transport network for € 20 a month.

This fulfils a promise made by the new President of the Community of Madrid, Cristina Cifuentes, during her election campaign. Cifuentes was elected in June 2015.

The new age threshold – up from the current age limit of 23 years – will benefit more than 160 000 young travellers, bringing the total number of potential youth pass holders to 550 000.
The measure will cost a reported € 84m a year. From October to December the estimated cost is € 17m. The new prices of the youth pass will coincide with the start of the new academic year.
