Autonomous driving and intelligent vehicles are definitely in focus worldwide and the interest in the area continues to increase. During the past four days, the research questions have been discussed and presented by 580 delegates at the 2016 IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium. The prestigious conference was hosted by SAFER and Chalmers on June 19-22 at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg.

“I am impressed but not surprised by the technical quality of the papers and the number of delegates. The area of intelligent vehicles is booming”, says Jonas Sjöberg, professor at Chalmers and General Chair of IV16.

Researchers, engineers, practitioners, and students, from industry, universities and government agencies were invited to present their latest work and to discuss research and applications for intelligent vehicles and vehicle-infrastructure cooperation. 580 delegates from 42 countries were gathered, a record-high number. 13 sponsors and exhibitors added value to the conference and 6 organizations showed technical demonstrations at AstaZero proving ground on the last day of the conference.

Collaboration is the key

4931 cups of coffee helped to keep the discussions ongoing and according to the feedback the conference was a true success.

“SAFER’s well-developed collaborations between academy, industry and society, and national and international network are important when creating these kinds of conferences”, says Anna Nilsson-Ehle, director at SAFER and General Host of IV16. “In the close vicinity of Gothenburg we are fortunate to have presence of necessary competences, infrastructures and industrial applications and the actors to make it happen”.
