SUMMARY:Politico: Decarbonising Europe's transport sector
DESCRIPTION:The EU took a strong position in the global fight against climate change at the 2015 COP21 summit in Paris by setting an ambitious target of reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2030. Now it must turn this commitment into action. Ensuring transport contributes its fair share to these emissions cuts appears to be a near-insurmountable challenge. \nIn Europe\, transport’s oil dependency makes cars\, trucks\, airplanes and ships the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Road transport is a particular problem and responsible for 73% of total transport emissions\, because Europe’s 290 million road vehicles are over 90% reliant on oil. \nThere is a wide range of low-emission transport alternatives that can alleviate oil dependence and slash emissions in road transport: everything from batteries and ethanol to more efficient engines and smarter transport systems. But how soon can these solutions be scaled up to achieve significant emissions reductions? \nThe transition to low-emission transport can only be achieved through cooperation among carmakers\, consumers\, energy companies and technology providers\, as well as national and EU regulators. Binding targets to reduce the carbon intensity of road transport fuels and promote the use of renewable energy by 2030 have been set. However\, the recent European Commission’s “Clean Energy Package for All” proposes a phase out of conventional biofuels — the biggest source of renewable energy currently in transport. Is the 2030 objective now unrealistic? What solutions will national governments devise to meet emission cuts? \nThis event will gather high-level EU and national policymakers\, industry representatives\, energy experts and environment groups for a frank conversation on how to rev up transport emissions reductions efforts\, without wrecking European mobility and competitiveness. \nQuestions to be addressed at the event include: \n\nWhat transport technologies will help Europe speed up emissions reductions?\nWhat are the benefits and drawbacks of these technologies?\nShould national governments or the private sector take the lead in the transition to low emission transport solutions?\nCan policy makers assure the contributions of low emission transport energy such as electricity and ethanol are maximised?\n\nFor the full agenda\, please click here. \nTo register\, please click here. \n  \nSource: Politico Europe \n

SUMMARY:Workshop | Monitoring Systems for Resilient and Sustainable Bridges
DESCRIPTION:The SENSKIN project is organising its 1st workshop “Monitoring Systems for Resilient and Sustainable Bridges” on 8 November 2017 in Brussels (BluePoint Brussels\, formerly DIAMANT Centre). SENSKIN is a 42-month Horizon 2020 project implemented by 13 partners from 7 countries. The main objective of the project is to improve Structural Health Monitoring techniques for transport infrastructure through the development of an innovative monitoring and management system for bridges based on an inexpensive\, low power\, wireless\, skin-like sensor. \nThe workshop offers the chance to learn more about the project’s findings and discover the latest innovation in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The workshop will analyse the functional and operational requirements of the SENSKIN bridge monitoring system based on the needs of bridge owners and operators as well as the SENSKIN methodology. To facilitate and enhance knowledge exchange between practitioners in the field of SHM\, a number of monitoring systems already being used (e.g. BRIMOS) as well as those currently being developed in research projects (e.g. AEROBI) will be presented. \nFor further information click here. Participation to our workshop is free of charge but your registration prior to the event is required via this link.

SUMMARY:The European MaaS model: Achieving sustainable mobility
DESCRIPTION:According to the European Commission\, the European transport sector has to deliver a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 whilst providing affordable\, accessible\, safe and clean transport solutions. Mobility as a Service – MaaS – as acknowledged by the EU Green Deal and recently published Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy\, can be an answer with its significant emission reduction potential and provide Europeans with all-encompassing services to meet their mobility needs. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has been a turning point\, brought many undesired effects but has also opened up opportunities for improving our urban mobility systems and accelerating the sustainable transformations. For a better future\, we will need comfortable\, smart and sustainable mobility solutions\, like Mobility as a Service. The progress that we have made with MaaS in Europe over the past years is very much linked to the hard work of the European legislators in removing barriers from the development of integrated multimodal services and supporting the interoperability of these solutions. \nTo continue this fruitful collaboration and to kick-off this eventful year\, the MaaS Alliance will organise an online event with European Parliament and European Commission representatives as well as with key stakeholders from the mobility sector to discuss priorities and future steps to implement MaaS across the whole European Union. The event will be co-hosted by MEP Henna Virkkunen (EPP). \nOn 4 February 2021 10-11:30 when we will look at the past\, present and future of MaaS and discuss the topical legislative dossiers and strategies from the MaaS point of view. Speakers include Ms Henna Virkkunen (MEP/EPP)\, Mr Richard Szostak (Principal Adviser for Digitalisation\, DG MOVE) and Mr Jacob Bangsgaard (MaaS Alliance President / CEO of ERTICO – ITS Europe) and leading public and private organisations of the new mobility sector. \nIf you would like to participate\, please send an email to the MaaS Alliance.
