SUMMARY:MODALES will host its Final Conference on 12 May
DESCRIPTION:On 12 May\, the Horizon 2020 MODALES project\, coordinated by ERTICO\, will mark the end of its journey of almost four years with a one-day final dissemination event at the ERTICO Office in Brussels. \nMODALES has been working on solutions to reduce air pollution from all types of road vehicles. These include encouraging the adoption of low-emission driving behaviour and appropriate maintenance practices\, as well as the potential of ODB data and retrofits\, and also looking at legal aspects with respect to tampering. It is the first project that considers the interaction of powertrain\, brakes and tyres and driver behaviour to develop knowledge and guidance for low-emission driving. \nSince September 2019\, the 18 partners of the project have been working together to achieve that ambitious and important vision. The MODALES app for drivers has been developed and tested in real conditions in the project’s trial sites in Europe\, together with low-emission training videos\, to assess their effects on the drivers’ behaviour. \nThe MODALES Final Conference\, which will take place at ERTICO (Blue Tower\, Avenue Louise 326)\, offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the project’s key results and achievements\, and to share best practice and future opportunities for emission reduction in the road sector. \nCheck out the draft agenda here and register here free of charge. Registration is required to attend the event and spots are limited\, so make sure to register today! \nTo learn more about MODALES\, visit the project’s website. You can also follow the hashtag #MODALESproject on Twitter and join the MODALES Project group on LinkedIn.

SUMMARY:Webinar: ITS stories from the war in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:The war in Ukraine has claimed thousands of lives since the start of the aggression on 24 February 2022. The entire country is suffering heavy losses and the citizens of its capital\, the city of Kyiv\, have had cruise missiles flying over their heads and destroying their homes. The meaning of ‘safety’ in conditions of war is very different from the way we use this word in our everyday ITS discussions and activities. It is not about road accidents and speed limits. \nIn Kyiv\, the use of ITS by the city and companies that stepped up to help\, safety means survival. Guidance and routing of citizens to take shelter in safe places during missiles attacks\, as well as timely evacuation and rescue of citizens in need have been supported by ITS applications that were originally created and set up aiming towards safe and efficient\, as well as sustainable\, transport in the city. In Kyiv ITS is used to save lives. \nERTICO -ITS Europe is pleased to invite representatives from the City of Kyiv\, Stephanie Leonard from Tom Tom\, ERTICO Partner and Georgi Sokolianskyi from UBER\, also ERTICO Partner\, as well as Pedro Barradas from ARMIS ITS and ITS Portugal\, who hosted the 15th ITS European Congress in Lisbon earlier this year where the discussion first took place. Dr Johanna Tzanidaki\, Chief Innovation Officer at ERTICO\, and moderator of this webinar\, will invite the panellists to share their experiences on how lives were and are being saved in Ukraine in a powerful discussion online. \nRegister here and attend the online webinar on Thursday 14 September\, from 10:00 – 11:30.

SUMMARY:ERTICO discusses AI act and Traffic Management
DESCRIPTION:ERTICO follows the ongoing discussions related to the EU’s agenda and priorities\, but also hot topics within and beyond the ITS and Smart Mobility community. The current dialogue of the AI Act is of high relevance\, and ERTICO has the great pleasure of taking this opportunity to invite the Supervisory Board and Strategy Committee today\, Wednesday 18 October\, to its internal Workshop to discuss the AI Act and Traffic Management\, moderated by Dr Johanna Tzanidaki\, Chief Innovation Officer at ERTICO. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a better understanding of the AI Act debate in Traffic Management and engage in discussion on how it influences our ITS sector and traffic management. \n\n\n\nThe EU institutions are to reach an agreement on the AI ACT before the end of the year. The European Commission specifically\, has started to prepare a list of guidelines to be released in support of the AI ACT implementation as soon as the law is adopted. The inclusion of the management and operation of road traffic in the list of High-Risk systems in the Act’s Annex III has an impact on the business of Traffic Service Providers and the Traffic Industry at large. Regulating how AI is used and developed within the EU in order to ensure that the use of AI does not jeopardize citizens’ safety\, security\, and fundamental rights are valid arguments. However\, the future High-Risk sector-specific guidelines should recognise that in the case of Traffic Management\, the role that AI plays in the decision-making process must be examined from a number of perspectives (Strategic; Tactical; Operational). Accordingly\, the important criticality lies on whether the decision in managing traffic is taken by the AI system/tool or the human in the loop. The workshop will include presentations on the relevant use cases and how much AI makes Traffic Management high risk\, as this is defined in Annex III of the AI Act. ERTICO Strategy Committee Chairs\, Thomas Jaeger\, Dekra\, and Gino Franco\, SWARCO\, will open the workshop followed by an introduction to the AI Act by ERTICO CEO\, Joost Vantomme. \n\n\nSpeakers include the TM 2.0 Task Force members: Jorgen Bundgaard Wanscher (HERMES Traffic International) Annet Van Veenendaal (NDW/RWS- Ministry of the Netherlands) Carolien Mazal (TomTom) Bart Lannoo (BE MOBILE) Torben Titze (SWARCO) Franz Schober (YUNEX Traffic) Fabrizio Paoletti (Autostrade per L’italia)

SUMMARY:SUNRISE Webinar - Developing a Safety Assurance Framework for Connected and Automated Mobility Systems – State-of-the-Art\, gaps and requirements
DESCRIPTION:Safety assurance of automated vehicles is crucial for their successful adoption and deployment in society. Worldwide\, several initiatives have started to develop test and assessment methods for automated vehicles\, applying a scenario-based approach\, and combining both physical and virtual testing. However\, the lack of a common approach is leading to silo solutions\, hampering the large-scale and safe introduction of automated vehicles in our society. The SUNRISE project develops a harmonised and scalable Safety Assurance Framework that fulfills the needs of the different stakeholders involved in testing and safety assessment of automated vehicles\, from CCAM systems developers and Certifiers to Researchers and tool developers. \nTo achieve this goal\, SUNRISE will establish a European federated database centralising detailed scenarios for testing of CCAM functions and systems in a multitude of relevant test cases\, based on a virtual simulation environment with standardised\, open interfaces and quality-controlled data exchange. \nThis webinar will present the SUNRISE Safety Assurance Framework (SAF) development\, as well as the first related report which provides a comprehensive overview of existing safety assessment frameworks for CCAM systems\, their strengths and limitations\, as well as the identified requirements to be considered\, covering the needs of each stakeholder\, to support the development of SUNRISE SAF. \nAgenda: \n\nWelcome & SUNRISE project introduction (John-Fredrik Grönvall\, CHALMERS)\nSUNRISE Safety Assurance Framework development (John-Fredrik Grönvall\, CHALMERS)\nOverview and gaps of existing safety assurance frameworks (Jordi Pont\, IDIADA)\nQ&A\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Focus On: Micromobility
DESCRIPTION:The ERTICO Partnership is pleased to announce the next Focus On event on the topic of Micromobility\, taking place on 7 December 2023 at Friends House\, 173-177 Euston Road\, NW1 2BJ\, London\, UK. \nMicromobility encompasses a wide range of low-speed (generally under 25 km/h) vehicles using human power (active travel\, e.g. pedal cycles and kick-scooters) and/or electrical assistance. Although the pedal cycle is one of the oldest modes of transport\, the more recent advent of e-bikes\, e-scooters\, monowheels\, etc. as well as short-term hire and sharing schemes in cities\, brought about the term micromobility from the end of the 1990s. \nThe great variety of micromobility vehicles in recent years (size\, speed\, legal classification)\, has led to a debate on the role these vehicles should play in urban and suburban mobility\, their benefits and issues to be addressed. While most cities are increasing road space for active travel (in particular cycle lanes)\, there is discussion on what new micromobility modes can use them. Another point is the use of urban space for micromobility parking\, particularly by operator of shared vehicles. The degree of regulation of sharing operators\, road use by different kinds of light vehicles\, safety aspects and integration into urban transport networks are key issues. The role of ITS both in terms of facilitating sustainable and seamless mobility and also in terms of multimodal traffic and road space management\, is a key discussion topic\, with cities looking for the best responses to mobility changes and new business models which may be innovative but also disruptive. \nThis Focus On will feature two panel sessions with micromobility stakeholders sharing their views on these important topics while a third session will focus on the regulatory options that cities and national decision-makers have at their disposal. \nFull agenda can be viewed here. \nWe look forward to welcoming all ERTICO Partners to join the discussion.
