SUMMARY:Fitting Safety as Standard
DESCRIPTION:Lunch debate \nInés Ayala Sender MEP and the European Transport Safety Council have the pleasure of inviting you to a lunch debate on improving the night time visibility of lorries. \nIn 2011 around 4200 people died on EU roads in collisions involving Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and 75% of these road deaths were occupants of other vehicles. Road collisions involving HGVs tend to be more serious than other collisions because of the great size and mass of these vehicles. Part of these collisions are due to lateral and rear-end collisions at dusk or in the dark. \nDirective 2007/35/EC required\, from July 2008\, that HGVs with a minimum weight of 7.5 tonnes and trailers from a maximum mass of 3.5 tonnes\, must be fitted with retroflecting contour marking. This is a reflective sticky tape which marks the boundary of the rear and side of the goods transport vehicles. Thus\, conspicuity is improved in conditions of poor visibility\, at night or in adverse weather. These markings are mandatory for vehicles which have been registered after July 2011. \nBuilding on recent research carried out by SWOV\, this debate will discuss the social and safety benefits of retrofitting contour markings\, gathering representatives of road safety organisations\, academic experts\, police forces\, vehicle manufacturers and vehicle technology manufacturers. \nhttp://etsc.eu/fitting-safety-as-standard-night-time-visibility-for-lorries/?utm_source=ETSC&utm_campaign=0b9724c2bf-2016_1_12_contour_marking_invite&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3a7b55edbf-0b9724c2bf-103277945

SUMMARY:Data Exploitation in Intelligent Mobility – Academic Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event is aimed at academics and interested parties working in the field of data exploitation or intelligent mobility. The workshop will address some of the key issues affecting how we can use data to support the development of a truly intelligent and integrated transport system. The workshop will provide the opportunity to collaborate with academics from a range of institutions to contribute towards a special journal issue. \nThis workshop is the first in a series on Data Exploitation in Intelligent Mobility. In the first half of the workshop we will discuss specific data sets and the challenges of utilising such data through a range of short talks followed by a panel led discussion. In part two we will split into small groups to look at ways to tackle the challenges identified. These teams will then have the opportunity to write a short paper/case study to be published and presented to the business community digitally. We will be inviting authors to present their papers at the next workshop and at our conference later this year. In addition\, these short papers will be invited to be extended into articles for a special issue we are currently organising. \nWe will discuss and use data from three different databases which are available on our website \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/data-exploitation-in-intelligent-mobility-tickets-20053993033
