In the second part of our Exclusive Interview Series on the Future of European Mobility, CEO Joost Vantomme meets with Paloma Aba Garrote, Director of CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency during the ERTICO Strategic Think Tank event to hear more about her expertise in overcoming challenges in translating research into tangible deployment for Intelligent Transport Systems, particularly for Connected, Cooperative & Automated Mobility (CCAM).

Highlighting CINEA’s dual focus on research and deployment through programmes like Horizon Europe and the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), Paloma emphasises the importance of fostering cross-border cooperation, scaling innovation, and ensuring compliance with EU legislation. She also calls attention to tools like the Horizon Results Booster and the European IP Helpdesk, designed to help researchers bridge the gap to market readiness.

Looking ahead, Paloma highlights the importance of fostering cross-border cooperation and involving all necessary actors while emphasising the added value of EU programmes beyond financial support. Participation fosters collaboration across Member States, compliance with EU legislation, and large-scale ITS deployment.

For the future, Paloma anticipates high-quality applications under upcoming funding calls and encourages stakeholders to leverage the tools and platforms provided by the European Commission, such as sectorial events like Connecting Europe Days, to create meaningful alliances and drive innovation in sustainable mobility.

Her insights reflect the broader ambition of CINEA to turn research into actionable, impactful solutions that advance Europe’s mobility goals, paving the way for cleaner, more connected transport systems across the continent.

These insights will help pave the way for further enriching dialogues at the ITS European Congress in Seville, 19–21 May 2025, where industry leaders and innovators will explore transformative ideas for intelligent transport systems under the theme ‘Clean, Resilient, and Connected Mobility.’
