The Hanseatic city presents the newest system in coordination of construction sites at ITS European Congress
Glasgow (Scotland), 06 June 2016. ITS European Congress is one of the largest events on intelligent transport systems and services (ITS) worldwide. The application of Hamburg for hosting the ITS World Congress 2021 is reaffirmed by the participation at the ITS European Congress in Glasgow. „We want to fulfill the future mobility requirements, not only for our citizens but also the city’s industry. Therefore an innovative system of coordination at construction sites is inevitable“, said Hamburg’s senator of economy, transport and innovation Frank Horch. During the international event in Scotland, the city of Hamburg presents its new ROAD touch table.
Competing to host the ITS World Congress in year 2021, Hamburg tries to establish the feasibility of hosting by introducing the newest development in coordination of construction sites. Construction sites have by far a major negative impact on smooth traffic flow. The significant investment in road construction in the future has also led the way to embracing ITS technology. It is strongly believed that the deployment of ITS technology can solve the problems facing now.
In adoption of ITS technology Hamburg’s agency of roads, bridges and water (LSBG) has developed the software ROADS (Roadwork Administration and Decision System) in order to enable the coordination of construction projects at an earlier stage. Moreover, all relevant information of various construction sites can be summarized and displayed clearly on a georeferenced digital map. The contribution that the integrated touch table application can make to enabling the collaborated planning of construction projects has been recognized. Frank Horch, senator of economy, transport and innovation: “With the deployment of ROADS, planners can now recognize the optimization potentials of construction projects even before the traffic congestion occurs. The construction projects can be optimized and effectively coordinated with the findings of ROADS.” The traffic in Hamburg becomes safer and more efficient through the application of ROADS.
The ITS World Congress is held yearly, alternating between Europe, Asia Pacific and Americas. Roughly 10.000 visitors are expected each year. The congress provides a great opportunity for all the guests to come together and discuss about the latest developments in ITS. Furthermore, they also have the opportunity to visit the accompanying exhibitions, exchange views and participate in live demonstration showcasing the current ITS technology. Hosting of the ITS World Congress will be an incentive to introduce ITS technology in Hamburg city. Hamburg also wants to provide a testing platform with the intention to make contribution for the development to a more sustainable and efficient city and maintaining its leading role in the use of intelligent transport technologies.
