One year after the launch of Galileo Initial Services, in December 2016, EGNSS users met at the 1st Galileo User Assembly, held in Madrid on 28 and 29 November 2017, to discuss their experiences of using Galileo and their needs for the future. The 1st Galileo User Assembly was hosted by the European GNSS Service Centre at its premises in Madrid. Participants at the event were given a general update on the Galileo programme, along with presentations of Galileo Initial Services performance, the Galileo Services Roadmap, and the Galileo User Interfaces.
On the first day of the Assembly, Galileo and EGNOS users participated in the first ever EGNSS User Consultation Platform, broken into four thematic groups – Transport, Mass Market, Professional and R&D. The participants presented the findings of their discussions in a plenary session that was held on the second day of the Assembly.
Francois Fischer (ERTICO – ITS Europe) participated in the thematic group on Transport issues and, based on the outcomes of the inLane H2020 Innovation Action, provided useful contributions to the discussions. Francois Fischer also presented the results of the Transport group’s discussions at the plenary session the following day.
The UCP (User Consultation Platform) conclusions of the Road transport group mainly focused on the Automated Driving area, where very high level of performance requirements are expected for the GNSS based positioning and navigation. Furthermore the GNSS positioning is seen by experts as a pretty good and affordable solution for automotive driving, needing however to consider sensor fusion with data from different sources (computer vision, connected sensors …). The “High Definition” positioning would therefore result from the sensor fusion, which would require to define specific performance requirements for the “sensor fusion PNT (Position Navigation and Time)”.
