Workshop: Provision of EU-Wide Real-Time Traffic Information Services
June 26, 2013 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
Workshop linked to the Directive 2010/40/EU (“ITS Directive”)
“Provision of EU-Wide Real-Time Traffic Information Services”
26 June 2013 – 10.00–16.00, Hotel Bedford, Rue du Midi 135-137 – Brussels
Accurate real-time traffic information services empower users to make well-informed decisions both before and during their journeys and therefore they have the potential to contribute to reducing congestion, increasing travel time reliability and improving road safety.
Due to advances in data-collection technology and efficiency improvements in the way how data can be processed and distributed to users, a proliferation of traffic information services is currently taking place throughout the EU. There is, however, a continuing concern that not all relevant data is made available or is correctly processed, or that resulting information is not timely disseminated to users. Such risks can increase with the growth in the number of actors that are active in the traffic information service chain.
The ITS Directive foresees that specifications will be adopted by the European Commission to make EU-wide real-time traffic information services accurate and available to users across borders. These specifications will be binding and will need to aim at ensuring compatible and interoperable developments, where possible based on existing standards and technology. The initiative will contribute to EU-wide continuity and harmonised delivery of traffic information services.
Currently, the European Commission is conducting a study in support to the development of the specifications on the Provision of EU-Wide Real-Time Traffic Information Services (Priority action “b” of the ITS Directive).
The objective of the workshop is to inform interested stakeholders and gather their opinions on the key issues and possible options for the development of the specifications.
Key topics to be discussed during the workshop include:
Technological developments and market trends
The role of public authorities and the issues related to public-private co-operation
The availability of and access to public and private data and the conditions for the use and re-use of data
The potential role for harmonisation and regulation
The challenges related to measuring, monitoring and managing data quality
Findings and key issues will be discussed with participating stakeholders from the whole value chain through three panel sessions.
