For the past few years, Dutch road users have increasingly benefited from real-time safety messages directly in their vehicles. Today, thanks to the Safety Priority Services (SPS) programme and the power of Monotch’s TLEX®, around 4 million connected vehicles in the Netherlands now receive alerts about approaching ambulances. The initiative has culminated in full nationwide coverage, with 100% of Dutch ambulances digitally connected, and efforts already underway to include fire trucks.

From concept to connection: smart safety in action

The success of the SPS programme lies in seamless cooperation between public authorities and private mobility leaders. The last week of March marked the official closing of the programme, led by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. During the final demonstration, ANWB, Be-Mobile, KIA Europe, Hyundai, HaasAlert, and TomTom showcased how their vehicles display real-time alerts, helping drivers make safer decisions in critical moments. These systems are all connected to UDAP – the Urban Data Access Platform deployed across the Netherlands and powered by TLEX®.

Tangible safety, trusted technology

The impact of these services is already evident on Dutch roads. A recent user survey showed that 85% of respondents feel safer thanks to these alerts, and 80% trust the quality and timeliness of the service. Over the past three years, usage of the service has increased by 34% – a testament to the growing relevance and adoption of connected vehicle communication.

“This programme proves that real-time traffic communication can be deployed nationwide and make a measurable difference in road safety. We’re proud that TLEX forms the digital backbone of UDAP, through which our nation has realised this achievement. But even more so, we’re proud of what it means for drivers, passengers, and emergency services every day,” says Menno Malta, CEO & Founder of Monotch.

From ambition to reality – and beyond

What started as an ambitious innovation programme is now a proven, working system that enhances road safety at scale. The national UDAP platform, along with its connections to vehicle manufacturers and mobility service providers, demonstrates how collaboration and the proper digital infrastructure can yield tangible results in the real world. For Monotch, this milestone reflects a core value: turning complex mobility challenges into tangible, scalable solutions.

The future: more vehicles, more alerts, more impact

With ambulance connections complete and fire trucks next in line, the network of emergency vehicle alerts will only grow stronger. Every additional vehicle connected to UDAP adds another voice to the digital dialogue on the road, making traffic talk not just a concept, but a lived reality for millions of Dutch drivers.
