The European Union’s (EU) TENT-T Programme will contribute over € 1m to preparatory studies for the construction of a rail and road bridge over the port of Malmö.
The studies will prepare for the construction of the new bridge, which will be designed to improve cargo transfer at the port and increase national rail capacity in the harbour area.
The studies will clarify the overall layout of the new transport network and provide detailed plans for the bridge, and the adaptation of the rail and road infrastructure. The studies will investigate increasing rail capacity and flexibility for cargo operations, and the construction of new public roads in the harbour area.
The process will also include environmental and public welfare analyses.
The EU sees the project as having the potential for significant impact on Sweden and the EU’s rail freight capacity, due to the port’s close linkage with the main European (TEN-T) rail network.
The project was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under the TEN-T Annual Call 2013, priority ‘Maritime transport’.
