From mid-January till 18th March 2022, the SHOW autonomous shuttle service is open for business in Tampere! The service, which covers a 3.5km route along Insinöörinkatu, Teekkarinkatu, Ahvenisjärventie, Opiskelijankatu in the Hervanta neighbourhood, is free of charge to the general public from 8.30 till 15.30 on weekdays.

On offer are seamless automated transport chain demonstrations carried out in the new automated light rail corridor between the Hervanta suburb and TAYS University Hospital Campus area with electrified automated demand-responsive transport (DRT) services both in Hervanta and TAYS Campus.

The plan is to keep enlarging the fleet of autonomous vehicles and have several electric shuttles by the end of 2023. The challenging weather conditions of Tampere, which bring icy roads, hidden lane markings (e.g. covered by snow), poor visibility, drifting snow and very low temperatures, make the site an ideal testing ground.

Tampere is the third-largest city in Finland and the largest inland regional centre in the Nordics and wants to promote low-carbon, energy-efficient transport.

Cities like Tampere are increasingly focusing on the opportunities opened up by connected mobility services. As we at ERTICO have remarked when outlining our Urban Mobility roadmap, “city governments seek mobility solutions able to significantly reduce traffic congestion, while increasing the use of collective and low-carbon means of transport”.

To this end, projects like SHOW and its demo activities are turning points in making the future of mobility a reality of today.
