The city of Pitești is planning to purchase a fleet of 70 environmentally friendly buses with the help of a loan worth € 13 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Pitești’s current fleet of buses will be completely replaced, improving the quality of transport for visitors and residents and reducing environmental pollution. The loan will also help to pay for an automated fare collection system on the buses. Jean-Patrick Marquet, the EBRD’s Director for Municipal and Environmental Infrastructure, said, ‘We are pleased to bring modern transport solutions to Pitești. For the residents of this city this will mean a safer, more efficient and higher-quality commute with less CO2 emissions.’ The new bus fleet fits into Pitești’s long-term plan to improve its transport infrastructure. Since 2009 streets in the city centre have been modernised, improving traffic flows and road safety. The EBRD is also helping other cities in Romania to establish modern and sustainable transport infrastructure, having invested approximately € 6.7 billion in 364 projects across the country.
