The innovation platform SENSORIS, coordinated by ERTICO – ITS Europe and initiated by HERE Technologies has established another milestone of digital infrastructure needed for connected and automated driving.

SENSORIS announces the completion of a new specification v1.1.0 for the exchange of vehicle-based sensor data in July 2019. This version, available for the consortium members, comes with an update enabling the description of sensor data requests from the cloud towards the vehicle. The capability of requesting sensor data is a major milestone within the goals of SENSORIS. It realizes the missing link in the loop towards flexible, dynamic and data economic sensor data collection within the vehicle.

Simultaneously to the finalization of v1.1.0 the current specification version v1.0.0 is made public under Creative Commons (CC BY-ND 4.0) license to be freely used by the automotive industry.  The specification will be made available on the SENSORIS website.

With a contribution of already 38 member companies, SENSORIS is gaining public attention. The specification V1.0.0 has been chosen to be used within implementation of the EU Regulation 886 on “Safety Related Traffic Information National Access Points”. The demo of an end-to-end proof of concept has successfully been presented on 3 June at the ITS Europe Congress marking a giant leap for safer roads.

SENSORIS specifications will be handled through a dual license model. Every release will be first released internally to the members of SENSORIS under a SENSORIS license. As SENSORIS is committed to be open to the public, all schemes and documentation will be published after a 12 month retention period to the public under the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license. The published package under this license also contains HTML-documentation as well as the schema description in Google Protocol Buffers (protobuf) language.

What is allowed to do:

  • Download the schema from the website.
  • Compile a protobuf library using the openly available protobuf compiler.
  • Use the protobuf library to implement any software that encodes or decodes SENSORIS messages.
  • Define proprietary (non-standardized) Any-extensions.
  • Use SENSORIS and your proprietary extensions even commercially between non-member to non-member business cases.
  • You can join the consortium and contribute.

What is not allowed to do:

  • Change the protobuf schema and distribute it to third parties under any name (SENSORIS or other) to exchange data.
