Heavy goods vehicles transporting goods in Europe must comply with certain rules on weights and dimensions for road safety reasons. Currently, directive 96/53/EC sets maximum common measures, ensuring that Member States cannot restrict the circulation of vehicles which comply with these limits from performing.

A new legislative proposal, amending Directive 96/53/EC, aims to facilitate the use of more energy-efficient and safer trucks. The proposal released by the European Commission is currently under discussion at the European Parliament.

The Rapporteur will present his draft recommendation for second reading in the next TRAN Committee meeting on 29.01.15 from 10.30-10.50.
