To promote discussions among experts from several European Transport Ministries, a workshop on ‘’EU legal framework to certify automated road transport systems in urban areas’’ was held in Athens, Greece on 5 May 2014. The workshop took place in the context of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It was organized by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks of the Hellenic Republic, Municipality of Trikala and Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) under the framework of the DG RTD CityMobil 2 project with the support of European Commission, iMobility Support (iMobility Forum) and VRA (Vehicle and Road Automation Networking) support action projects, and ERTICO-ITS Europe.
The working meeting’s aim was to discuss the legal and regulatory framework and to start formulating proposals for needed measures regarding certification of Automated Road Transport Systems (ARTS) in urban areas. Measures may include a European Directive on the issue. The related automation technologies were briefly presented and the discussion also covered the risk assessment framework. The workshop and round table discussions involved several technical, certification and legal representatives of 12 European Transport Ministries, all experts in guided transport systems and ITS in general.
