The Lithuanian government’s Ministry for Transport is encouraging cities in the country to develop nSustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).
The ministry is particularly targeting the country’s 15 cities with populations of more than 25 000 to develop such plans, which can make local transport and mobility safer, more environmentally friendly and more inclusive.
The government’s policy is led by a commission involving other national and governmental organisations, including the ministries for the environment and health, the Lithuanian Road Administration, the Association of Lithuanian municipalities and the national Disability Affairs Council.
The country’s capital Vilnius is currently preparing its own SUMP, and other major cities such as Kaunas and Klaipėda have been actively involved in EU-funded projects focussing on the development of SUMPs.
