Imagine a city where the air feels fresher, streets are quieter, and every journey is powered by smart, sustainable technology. Welcome to Seville, the next frontier for Europe’s urban mobility transformation! As the proud host of the 2025 ITS European Congress, Seville is setting a bold example, harnessing Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to meet the EU’s ambitious goals for a climate-neutral future.

But what makes Seville the perfect city to lead this charge? Join us as we explore why Seville is more than just a venue—it’s a living lab for sustainable mobility and a model for Europe’s climate-neutral vision. What lessons can it offer us? And how might they inspire the cities we call home?

Leading the Way to Climate Neutrality

Walk the streets of Seville today, and you’ll sense the energy of a city on a mission. With a goal to be climate-neutral by 2030, Seville is determined to lead by example. Through the ambitious Seville Respira Plan, the city has reimagined its urban landscape to prioritise people, not cars. Pedestrian-friendly zones encourage strolling over driving, while clean air initiatives make every breath feel, well, fresher.

eCitySevilla: An Urban Lab for Low-Emission Living

In Seville’s Cartuja district, the eCitySevilla project is breaking new ground as a model low-emission urban area. This isn’t your average green initiative. With robust EV infrastructure, real-time energy monitoring, and ITS-powered energy efficiency, eCitySevilla embodies what a truly sustainable city could look like.

One standout feature is the Qanat Cartuja Project, a clever blend of ancient techniques and modern technology. This system tackles Seville’s intense summer heat with ITS-enabled cooling methods, showcasing the city’s innovative approach to urban resilience. Through eCitySevilla, Seville is bringing the EU’s sustainability priorities to life—offering a blueprint for low-emission living that other cities could adopt.

180 Kilometres of ITS-Optimised Bike Lanes

Seville’s cycling transformation is one of Europe’s most inspiring stories in sustainable urban mobility. Back in 2006, cycling in Seville was almost non-existent, with only 12 km of bike lanes and just 0.5% of daily trips made by bike. Fast forward to today, and the city boasts an extensive 180 km network of protected cycling paths, designed with ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) to make cycling safer, more accessible, and more efficient. This network has become an integral part of the city’s daily life, with around 70,000 trips made by bicycle every day.

A key feature in Seville’s success is the  SEVici shared bicycle system. Launched as a public-private partnership, SEVici now provides 2,500 bikes across 263 stations, offering an affordable and convenient transport option for residents and tourists alike. The system allows those without storage space or a personal bike to cycle with ease, making cycling an option for everyone.

This infrastructure prioritises safety, accessibility, and comfort, drawing on best practices from Dutch, German, and Danish cycling networks. With ITS-enabled features and a focus on continuous, direct, and visible routes, Seville’s cycling system is a powerful model of sustainable mobility in action, encouraging an eco-friendly alternative to cars and helping to create a cleaner, more liveable city.

The MathIT.MOTUS App: Smarter Traffic Solutions

Urban mobility is a major factor in quality of life, and nowhere is this more evident than in Seville’s PCT Cartuja district, where the MathIT.MOTUS app uses real-time ITS data to optimise commuter traffic. Through predictive analytics, the app reduces congestion and improves public transit efficiency, paving the way for smarter, more streamlined urban planning.

Imagine opening an app that not only tells you the best route but also considers real-time traffic data to help you avoid jams and get to your destination quicker. This is more than convenience—it’s a glimpse into the future of seamless, data-driven urban mobility. Congress attendees will see how ITS solutions like MathIT.MOTUS are actively transforming how we move through our cities.

Seville: A Model of EU’s Vision for Resilient, Sustainable Cities
