The city of Granada is hosting a meeting with associations representing people with disabilities to discuss the barriers they face in their daily mobility.

Around fifty representatives are set to attend the meeting on 17 September, called by Mariela Fernández Bermejo, the newly appointed Delegate for Territorial Development and Housing in Granada.

The feedback collected at the meeting will be used to help make public transport more accessible for people with reduced mobility.

Fernandez Bermejo – the co-founder and former technical director of Ciudad Accesible, a non-profit accessibility organisation – said that it was important to ensure the universality of vital public services, such as interurban bus transport, so that it is offered on equal terms for all citizens.

The adaptation of metropolitan buses, Fernandez Bermejo confirmed, is one of the issues that will be discussed at the meeting.

Since 2014 the Regional Government of Andalusia has been renewing the contracts of 135 road transport providers, include those operating in Granada.

It has introduced new requirements for companies that offer the service, including precise requirements for the accessibility and safety of the fleets.
