FIA event “Developing safe, efficient and connected mobility” Brussels, 27 November 2013
EU Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas, FIA President Jean Todt, ERTICO – ITS Europe CEO Hermann Meyer and other key stakeholders gathered at Autoworld in Brussels on 27 November 2013 to debate the future challenges of the connected vehicle. Both the associated road safety benefits and the added-value services such technologies will bring to users were discussed.
All high-level speakers emphasized the need for a closer cooperation between all sectors and stakeholders to achieve the vision of ‘5-star drivers, in 5-star vehicles, on 5-star road’. They also believe that it is critical that the consumer comes at the centre of the discussion. The consumer must accept the new technologies and therefore the driver needs must be better understood. The EU must take the political lead in the process.
ERTICO’s Hermann Meyer explained how the development of cooperate mobility solutions implies working on a long value chain. Data must be collected, processed and exchanged. Regarding standardisation, an agreement on technical and behavioural solutions is essential. Business models will need to be developed that are profitable or beneficial for all stakeholders involved. Regarding the role of the driver in the connected mobility concept, Dr Meyer explained that the eCall / HeERO project offers a good learning point.
