The “research question of the month” news article provides a broad overview of the UDRIVE research question areas. In five consecutive articles, we zoom in on the five research question topics covered by the UDRIVE project. While the September article dealt with risk calculation, this month’s article focuses on driver distraction and inattention.
October’s research question is “What factors determine how drivers proactively allocate their attention in anticipation of how a driving situation will unfold and why do these proactive selection mechanisms sometimes fail?. The EU co-funded project UDRIVE is the first large-scale European Naturalistic Driving Study on cars, trucks and powered two-wheelers. Naturalistic driving can be defined as a study undertaken to provide insight into driver behaviour during every day trips by recording details of the driver, the vehicle and the surroundings through unobtrusive data gathering equipment and without experimental control.
