The ARENA concept for road user charging is in line with the harmonisation process within the EU. In line with the newly adopted European Electronic Toll Service EETS the concept involves the introduction of competitive actors on the market for European telematics services – the EETS providers.
ARENA provides one the first test beds of this new service in Europe during the four month field trial says Michael Forss at NetPort.Karlshamn the organisation responsible for the project.
The trial is based on the requirements set by EETS and the corresponding interface specifications. The trial will evaluate how different equipments for the collection of distance based road user charges for heavy vehicles perform in practice in order to evaluate and verify the ARENA concept’s viability and attractiveness. The goal is also to gather experience and knowledge to support political decisions. Companies from for example New Zealand Spain and Canada are providing their On-Board-Equipment for continuous testing under normal conditions in vehicles of hauliers based in Test Site Southern Sweden.
The practical ARENA Field Trial is conducted in cooperation with EROAD Fela Management GMV Octo Telematics Skymeter Corporation and Telenor Sweden. Several hauliers based in southern Sweden provide vehicles for the trial.
