The City of Bucharest is implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) with the assistance of the Romanian capital’s bike riders.
The SUMP team has launched an online platform where cyclists can input data on their cycling habits, namely start and end points of their route and frequency of travel. Participants can also comment on improvements they would like to see regarding the city’s streets and traffic.
The cycling data, along with that collected from other road users, will be entered into traffic simulation software to interpret the city’s traffic flow. From this information planners will analyse the requirements of the new SUMP.
The initiative has received support from members of Bucharest’s riding community, including cycling advocate Marian Ivan. He has praised the inclusion of bike riders in the planning process, using his blog to call upon Bucharest to spread the word of the online survey. ‘Call your friends if they are away,’ he posts, ‘tell your neighbours if you know they don’t often go online, talk to colleagues! Give the link to everyone!’.
