The DFRS platform is advancing its pursuit to create a European Safety-Related Traffic Information (SRTI) ecosystem that will contribute to the ambitious EU Vision Zero goal, which seeks to eradicate road fatalities by 2050. The Technical Groups’ work is beginning to bear significant fruit. The latest milestone is the launch of the DFRS Dashboard, an interactive tool that shows the ecosystem’s data flow.
Data for Road Safety (DFRS) is a pioneering European ecosystem that fosters private-public cooperation for sharing Safety-Related Traffic Information (SRTI). Industry leaders partner to improve road safety through the large-scale use of free vehicle, crowd and infrastructure data under the principle of reciprocity. As a result of this exchange, they enable monitoring, predicting, and significantly reducing road hazards to minimise the number of casualties. The partnership has now launched a live map to track the data collected, providing large-scale insightful information.
POST Luxemburg is the creator of this novel tool, which empowers partners in the ecosystem to identify hazards in real-time and respond promptly. Since 2019, POST Luxembourg has actively participated in the DFRS ecosystem, granting the consortium access to its Data Intelligence Platform and leveraging its knowledge in real-time data processing and Data Science. In 2022, POST Luxembourg extended the accessibility of its Platform, making all the collected SRTI data available to the DFRS members and their Data Scientists as a collaborative development environment.
“Now, to go one step further, POST Luxembourg has implemented a new dashboard that is publicly available, presenting a comprehensive overview of security events that have transpired within the past 48 hours. The map displays multiple key elements including the frequency of occurrences on an hourly basis, precise details concerning individual events such as their coordinates, classification, and time of incidence and geographical clustering of incidents, such as instances of aquaplaning attributed to weather patterns in specific locations”, explains Nicolas Vivarelli, Data Intelligence Manager at POST Luxemburg and Group B co-chair within the DFRS Technical Group.
For Mohanad Ismail (WSP UK), Chair of the DFRS Technical Group, this is a significant step forward for the platform and the SRTI ecosystem and the translation of the solid cooperative spirit that defines DFRS. “Since we began our long-term deployment, we set the milestones for DFRS with collaborative working in mind as each member of DFRS has something unique to offer, which is realised when space and environment are created to allow members to contribute. This Dashboard marks our first milestone for the public. We can now share what makes DFRS so unique, and that is the tangible data from Car Manufacturers, Service Providers and Road Operators that have the potential to save lives. This is just the start. We have more milestones on the cusp of completion, so I invite all to watch this space”, adds Mr Ismail.

Join us at the ITS European Congress
The DFRS platform will be present at the leading event for the ITS community: the ITS European Congress. From 22 to 24 May, discover more about the platform and its SRTI ecosystem at the ERTICO stand, and witness the dashboard first-hand.
On Tuesday 23, connect with DFRS partners at the SIS 13 on ‘SRTI: How can a mobility data space help road safety?’. Joost Vantomme, ERTICO CEO and Chair of the DFRS General Assembly will moderate this Special Interest Session that will present the platform’s scope and future steps, benefits for the diverse stakeholders and the alignment with the EU legislation.
During the congress, DFRS will sign a Cooperation Letter with the National Access Point Coordination Organisation for Europe (NAPCORE) to promote mutual learning and strengthen road safety data governance and knowledge.
“DFRS stands as a strong mobility data space for safer roads. It is a strong partnership that I am proud of, fostering active collaboration among the road authorities and key industry actors. A true win-win for helping the Vision Zero ambition in the EU”, stresses Joost Vantomme.
