The UN World Sustainable Transport Day on 26th November draws attention towards the impactful role of innovation in shaping the transport systems of tomorrow. On this occasion, ERTICO – ITS Europe reaffirms its commitment to advancing intelligent transport systems and sustainable mobility solutions that address global challenges while shaping a cleaner, safer, and more connected future. On this day, Vlad, Director of Strategy & Innovation, shares his thoughts on the way forward for innovation in mobility and transport. “This a timely reminder of the significant importance of collaboration, creativity, and vision in building a sustainable mobility ecosystem.”
A Collaborative Approach to Innovation
The UN World Sustainable Transport Day highlights the importance of partnerships in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). As per UN SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, we are aiming to have human settlements which are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. In Europe, the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy by the European Commission is the focus of our efforts on delivering the impact through a number of ERTICO-led initiatives. We seek to address with our Partners and through all of our activities, from European-funded projects, and innovation platforms to thought leadership initiatives and landmark events such as the ITS Congresses, the impact on the transport ecosystem. However, we are mindful of challenges, as reported by the European Environment Agency, in its report: “European Climate Risk Assessment”, with the particular role of transport as one of the most vulnerable elements in the cities and beyond. At the core of ERTICO’s work is its unique ability to unite diverse stakeholders, from public authorities and private companies to researchers and policymakers among other key stakeholders. For Vlad, this collaborative framework is essential. “True innovation happens when we unite different perspectives to tackle shared challenges,” he explains. The approach ensures that technological advancements are not developed in isolation but are integrated into a broader vision for sustainable and intelligent mobility.
A Holistic Vision for Mobility
World Sustainable Transport Day also serves as a call to inspire the shared purpose in tackling global mobility challenges. Vlad’s exemplifies this by focusing on intelligent transport systems that deliver tangible societal benefits, including the mission to build more resilient transport systems which are not only efficient but also contribute meaningfully to sustainability goals.
Sustainability in transport is about creating systems that respond to the needs of society as a whole. This philosophy is at the heart of ERTICO’s mission, where innovation and deployment go hand in hand to address the challenges and opportunities for a safer, smarter and more sustainable mobility future. As reflected in the UN Secretary-General’s message for this inaugural World Sustainable Transport Day, there is a dual role of transport, both a vital enabler of prosperity and a significant driver of climate impact. Vlad reflects, “The call for innovation and investment in cleaner technologies resonates with ERTICO’s mission to advance solutions such are alternative energy vehicles and data-driven logistics. “Achieving this transformation requires a collective commitment to innovation and we see these efforts during many events and especially at the annual ITS Congresses,” Vlad affirms, highlighting ERTICO’s dedication to leading this change.
His foundational aspect of innovation is grounded in a forward-thinking approach, recognising that transport systems must be adaptable, inclusive, and resilient. “Transport is about connection, that includes people, goods, and ideas,” he reflects. Under his guidance, the Innovation & Deployment team lead ground-breaking initiatives that explore the intersection of technology and deployment, ensuring that advancements are not only cutting-edge but also accessible to all.
For Vlad, innovation is not just about fostering technological advancements but also inspiring others with a shared purpose. His work exemplifies the commitment to drive meaningful change through intelligent transport systems which deliver real-world benefits. “Our mission is to build a future where transport serves society in the most sustainable and efficient way possible,” he states.
The Road Ahead
As the UN encourages reflection and action on sustainable transport, ERTICO reaffirms its commitment to driving progress. Vlad’s insights remind us of the important role that innovation plays in addressing global challenges. For ERTICO, the path forward is clear: continue to lead with a strategic vision, unite stakeholders around shared goals, and remain steadfast in the pursuit of smarter, safer and greener mobility solutions.
