Energy regeneration system saves Bilbao Metro €1.3m

Bilbao’s Metro network has saved € 1.3m in electricity costs thanks to a system that regenerates the energy produced by its trains.

The new system has saved the network 8.8m kWh in 2014 compared to the electricity it consumed in 2011.

In 2011 Bilbao’s Metro trains travelled a total of 4.6m km, requiring the consumption of 75 751 362 kWh. With a broader network in 2014 totalling 4.9m km, the energy use was predicted to increase to 80 192 028 kWh.
