The first car-sharing system in Romania, Pony Car Sharing, begun operations in Cluj-Napoca.
The car-sharing fleet comprises 50 cars, including two-seat models with automatic transmission and five-seaters with manual transmission. Once a shared car is booked, a trip costs 1.24 Romanian leu ( €0.28 ) per minute.
According to Demis Ghindeanu, one of the founders of Pony Car Sharing, the accompanying smartphone app shows users a lot of information about a car, including its features, how much petrol is in the tank, and how clean it is. This allows users to select the best option for them among available cars.
The widespread use of smartphones in Cluj-Napoca was one of the factors that convinced Pony Car Sharing to begin their operations there. ‘We chose Cluj-Napoca because we considered the town as one of the most technologically advanced in the country, a smart city. We are trying to revolutionise transport with these machines and technology,’ said Ghindeanu.
