In an age where digital connectivity and seamless data transmission have become integral to various industries, representatives from three cutting-edge 5G projects, 5G-LOGINNOV,5G-MOBIX, both ERTICO-led and 5GMETA, gathered in an online webinar held on 27th October to discuss policy recommendations from their projects’ perspectives.
Over 60 registrants were guided and supported by ERTICO experts, Dr Eusebiu Catana (5G-LOGINNOV Project Coordinator and I&D Senior Manager), Lidia Buenavida Pena (I&D Manager), Giuseppe Sirignano (I&D Support Manager), and Coen Bresser (5G-MOBIX Project Coordinator and I&D Senior Manager), in the discussion on how the projects aim to revolutionise various aspects of 5G technology deployment and data management. Besides ERTICO experts, the speakers also included Gorka Velez (Vicomtech) and Martin Speitel (IIS Fraunhofer).
Here are the key outcomes of this insightful exchange:
All three projects emphasise the need for a coherent regulatory framework to facilitate 5G deployment. This framework includes establishing a comprehensive set of rules for car manufacturers, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and infrastructure providers. Current regulations do not provide a holistic framework for automated driving, lacking clarity on required data rate and Quality of Service (QoS) parameters in the network. Cybersecurity is emerging as a critical concern for Vehicle-to-Everything (C2X) communication.
Strong collaboration among various stakeholders, including industry, research institutions, technology providers, and public authorities, is highlighted as a key component of their shared objectives. The importance of clear guidelines to protect privacy rights while deploying 5G technologies is stressed across all projects.
In addition, issues in this input revolve around the unclear business models for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) regarding third-party applications running in Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) environments and the ambiguity surrounding Business-to-Customer (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B) models for Network Slicing. The responsibility for business models is primarily vested in the industry, with policymakers focusing on creating a supportive framework.
Furthermore, the representatives of these projects were keen to address the challenges of 5G deployment with common objectives in mind. The projects share a commitment to enhancing knowledge and skills within the industry and among stakeholders through capacity building, training, and education.
The collaborative spirit and adaptable approaches advocated by these projects – 5G-LOGINNOV, 5GMETA, and 5G-MOBIX – are paving the way for the future deployment of 5G technology in Europe. In summary, these three cutting-edge 5G projects not only emphasise the need for regulatory cohesion, privacy protection, and collaboration among stakeholders but also share a common vision of addressing the challenges of 5G deployment through education and capacity building.
