In August of this year, Kapsch TrafficCom delivered and installed Weigh-In-Motion systems at four stations on two highways in Kazakhstan. The Weigh-In-Motion system developed by Kapsch allows the weighing of vehicles even while traveling at full speed. Two of the four stations are located at kilometer 59 of the highway from Almaty to Bishkek and the other two stations at kilometer 291 of the Astana-Petropavlovsk connection. Kapsch realized the project as a subcontractor in conjunction with other partners.

“We are very pleased about this order since it shows the great potential of this new system, introduced only in the past year,” says Erwin Toplak, COO of Kapsch TrafficCom. “We also hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate our competence in future projects in Kazakhstan.” Another 18 Weigh-In-Motion stations are in planning in parallel with the current project. The current order encompasses the delivery and installation of the high-precision weighing modules as well as the associated rear license plate detection system. Compliance with Kazakhstan law was an essential requirement as was the technical approval of the deployed equipment, which was successfully obtained in April.

Weigh-In-Motion – greater traffic safety, reduced road wear
Weigh-In-Motion systems weigh and inspect vehicles traveling at full speed. A collection of sensors detect whether a vehicle exceeds the maximum permissible weight. Additional sensors identify the vehicles based on their license plates, and the data is transmitted and evaluated in real-time. This allows overloaded vehicles to be detected on the road without impeding the flow of traffic. Road safety is improved while at the same time reducing road wear and emissions.
