The Network of National ITS Associations was recently warmly welcomed to Dublin for two days of stimulating meetings technical visits and discussions. On the first day attendees to the event were given the opportunity to learn about the current status of ITS in Ireland. Presentations included an insight to the next European ITS Congress – ‘Real solutions for real needs’ which will take place in Dublin in June 2013; an in depth look at how Dublin’s Leap card integrated ticketing projects operates; and information on the National Transport Authority’s integrated real-time passenger information and multi-modal planner.
A fascinating visit to the Light rail (LUAS) depot followed allowing Network members to see ITS in action by visiting the control room and maintenance depot of Dublin’s tram network. The traditional Networking dinner was held at the famous Johnny Foxes pub where attendees were able to make the most of Irish hospitality at its best.
The Plenary meeting on the second day was very productive with the Network deciding to research the usefulness of MoUs as a tool for ITS Associations and produce a Guide to Best Practice in addition to working together with ERTICO to compile a survey of national policy positions on the various actions in the ITS Action Plan and starting a new activity strand around how ITS Associations can help attract young people to work in the ITS sector.
The event was rounded off by a visit to the Dublin Port tunnel where members were able to see how both the Port Tunnel and related motorways are monitored and controlled.
The next meeting will take place in Helsinki March 21-22 kindly hosted by ITS Finland.
