A transit timetable display unit using epaper technology, developed by IBI Group, was successfully launched last week at a bus shelter in Oldbury, ten miles northwest of Birmingham.
The display uses technology similar to the Kobo and Kindle readers to show live information about bus arrivals at Oldbury Town Centre.
“We believe Oldbury to be the first UK use of this technology in this way,” said Gareth Tyler, the project manager. “And it may provide a new cost-effective smart mobility solution for clients worldwide.”
The unit is updated via mobile phone communication protocols (GSM/3G) and requires no power to display images and only a small amount of power to update images. Near Field Communications (NFC) tags behind the display units enable the transit information to be transferred to NFC-enabled smart phones.
During the four-month trial of the epaper display unit, IBI Group will explore the potential to turn the prototype into a range of products (includi August ng solar-powered options) that can be integrated with the company’s services and systems.
