Barcelona’s mayor, Ada Colau, has announced that the city will more than double its cycle network from 140 to 350 kilometres by 2019.

The measure is based on Barcelona’s Urban Mobility Plan 2013-2018, which aims to increase cycling from 1.5 per cent of daily journeys to 2.5 per cent. This is the equivalent of over 130,000 cycling trips per day in the city.

The expansion will add cycle routes to recently renovated parts of Barcelona’s road network, as well as ensuring that the busiest roads and streets will be cyclable.
