Opava has entered the final phase of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) which it hopes will provide a framework to provide more sustainable, smooth and interconnected public transport.
The last stage will see a number of public discussions held in the Czech city this month and in March, during which citizens will be able to provide feedback and comment on the SUMP.
Key features of the new plan include integrated pedestrian and cycling networks, with an emphasis on safety, as well as upgrading public transport.
Concrete measures will be the introduction of lower speed limits for vehicles (including several 30km zones), intelligent traffic light systems and pedestrian crossings, new cycling paths and parking charges for individual vehicles. Some streets will see a reduction in car lanes, with the space handed over to dedicated cycling lanes.
The realisation of the SUMP and the implementation of its associated measures will begin this year. The SUMP’s estimated budget is 375 m Czech Koruna (€13.5 m).
