An innovative system for managing parking spaces has been installed in a shopping centre in the Bavarian town of Passau.
The wireless magnetic indoor and outdoor field sensors, designed by German traffic system manufacturer MSR-Traffic, count incoming and outgoing vehicles in both directions and can detect those going in the wrong direction.
The new technology provides a low-cost and effective alternative to inductive loops and camera-based systems traditionally installed to manage parking facilities.
The network of sensors can calculate the number of free parking spaces at any time, with drivers informed through displays or signs. The system can also determine the speed of vehicles, enabling it to accurately record how many vehicles are located in the car park at any time.
Compared to other vehicle counting technologies, the sensors are maintenance-free and easy to install, incurring less hardware and installation costs than conventional systems.
