FP7 project STADIUM aims at improving the performance of transport services and systems made available for large events hosted by big cities. Running from 2009 unto 2013 the project will develop a set of guidelines and tools to support managers and organisers of transport mainly on the use of ICT technologies. It will also design and implement ITS applications in demonstrators in South Africa (related to FIFA world Cup 2010) India (Commonwealth Games 2010) and UK (Summer Olympics 2012).

ERTICO Partner PluService is managing the South African demonstrator. In cooperation with local South African partners Pluservice has developed a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) service called Last Mile operational since end of May 2010 in time for the FIFA World Cup which is currently underway.

The STADIUM DRT solution has been accepted as a special IRT service for the FIFA World Cup in Cape Town. It’s managed by local partner Peninsula Holdings using equipped vehicles and the control centre provided by STADIUM partners.

The STADIUM DRT solution Last Mile has been well advertised in the context of the World Cup and it is believed that it will bring the following benefits to Cape Town:

  • Reduction of traffic congestion at the Central Business District (CBD) the FIFA matches will take place and where many of the hotels are located.
  • Convenient transfer to the CBD
  • Service can be booked through DRT application – both directions
  • Hotels guesthouses can book service on behalf of guests
  • Vehicles will have area for luggage

PluService’s next steps at the South African demonstrator include the performance of the evaluation of the Last Mile service during and after the FIFA World Cup and turn into a sustainable system after the World Cup.
