The presentation “Re-use of FOT Data to Assess the Frequency and Impact of Distracted Driving” was given on the occasion of the Fourth International Symposium on Naturalistic Driving Research held at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center in Blacksburg, Virginia 25-28 2014. The symposium provided researchers and practitioners with an overview of international naturalistic driving studies (NDS) and insight into the next generation of NDS in addition to the opportunity to interact with panelists to discuss naturalistic driving in their respective countries.
On 26 August 2014, researchers Andreas Landau, Dr Barbara Metz, Dr Volker Hargutt and Alexandra Neukum of the Würzburg Institute for Traffic Sciences, presented their work re-using data collected in a FOT to gain information on the frequency and impact of distracted driving in a natural environment. Video as well as objective data recorded directly from vehicle’s system were analysed. The most frequent secondary was using the hands-free telephone followed by video coded car related inputs. There were large differences between drivers regarding the frequency of distracted driving. Different methodological approaches were developed for analyzing the impact of secondary tasks. Compensating strategies of the drivers found in simulator studies could be replicated partly. The analyses show that valuable results can be obtained from re-using data collected in a NDS or FOT.
