On 20 June 2017, the SPICE project attended the Innovation Meeting of the CIVITAS PORTIS project.
PORTIS is an EU subsidy project, which seeks to promote sustainable transport links between cities and their ports by means of environmentally-friendly transport facilities. The project involves 33 partners from 5 cities (Antwerp, Aberdeen, Constanta, Trieste, and Klaipeda) that will be working together until August 2020 on sustainable mobility in terms of commuter’s traffic, as well as on transport and logistics. PORTIS aims to show that sustainable mobility can increase functional and social cohesion between city centres and ports, while pushing the economy forward and boosting the allure of modern urban environments.
SPICE was represented at the meeting by Mrs Esme Cushing (Principal Transport Planner, Northamptonshire County Council). She presented the SPICE project, explaining its purpose and objectives and detailing how SPICE will gather best practices in public procurement, analyse them from a legal and technical perspective, and turn them into recommendations that public authorities at all levels can use in the future. Mrs Cushing outlined the challenges that governments currently face, emphasizing that those undertaking public procurement have been forced to adopt the fast pace of innovation against increasing concerns regarding the environment and sustainability. Last but not least, she also presented some practical case studies from the cities of Tampere, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.
The Innovation Meeting participants expressed particular interest in the case studies and understanding which procurement options could work best for them. At the end of the meeting, PORTIS and SPICE agreed that there are good opportunities for working together to exchange knowledge throughout the lifetime of both projects.
