Aligned with the European data strategy and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, deployEMDS, a project co-funded under the EU Digital Europe Programme, will support policymaking by enabling data sharing and reuse for efficient multimodal mobility and traffic management.
The project aims to make data available in machine-readable formats while facilitating innovative services and applications. To this end, the project’s implementation sites have outlined their plans for the project’s sixteen use cases. The implementation sites in Barcelona (ES), Île-de-France (FR), Milan (IT), Lisbon (PT), Flanders (BE), Sofia (BG), Stockholm (SE), Tampere (FI), and Budapest (HU) have confirmed the contextual information regarding the technical characteristics and requirements of each one. Each use case is categorized into four main groups: data for mobility planning, speciality travel information, public transport operation and multimodality, this categorisation aims to construct common road maps, ensuring a strong connection and resource-sharing between use cases with similar objectives and contexts.
The project relies on the leverage of collaboration: creating an environment that favours interoperability, trust, and value-driven data-sharing. The emphasis is on building a decentralised technical infrastructure while creating common governance mechanisms. The importance of the deployEMDS implementation plans lies in breaking down scenarios to make them fully comprehensible. This enables other upcoming cities to review the specifications, identify parallels, and duplicate strategies and procedures. Some challenges have already been identified: for example, the complexity of the regulatory landscape that surrounds data sharing, which also reinforces the idea and importance of mobility data-sharing.
Following the conclusions and analyses from these Detailed Implementation Plans (Part A), the ideation and production of the Detailed Implementation Plans (Part B) will occur. The latter will outline in the project plans for the EMDS deployment within (local use cases) and across (transversal use cases) the nine implementation sites.
The implementation sites will be supported by the expertise of the project’s forty-five European partners, until the finalisation of the project in October 2026. At the project’s General Assembly held two weeks ago in Stockholm, project partners and Advisory Board members reviewed and discussed the project’s strategic perspective and direction. ERTICO’s CEO, Joost Vantomme, also a member of deployEMDS’ Advisory Board, joined the exciting conversations and got to learn more about the implementation sites and their plans. These value-driven interactions were also enriched with the expertise and perspective of representatives from DG MOVE and DG CONNECT, elevating the real value of the project and its impact on meeting the European Commission’s agenda in the context of data spaces.
