Toyota has announced plans to build the world’s first megawatt-capable hydrogen power station to fuel its hydrogen truck prototype.
The hydrogen power station, located in Long Beach, Southern California, will generate its hydrogen from 100 percent renewable sources, and eventually power imported Toyota Mirai passenger cars and its hydrogen truck. The power station will also generate enough energy to power more than 2,000 homes and fuel the daily driving of 1,500 fuel cell cars.
This project represents a clear sign of Toyota’s efforts to build a clean and sustainable future powered by hydrogen. This technology has the power to transport 80,000 tons of freight while emitting nothing more than water vapour, improving the performance ability of trucks, which can cover an eighth of a mile in 8.9 seconds carrying 15,000 kg, compared to 14.6 seconds for an equivalent diesel.
