One of the hottest topics in ITS today are automated vehicles and their role in the transport ecosystem. VRA and several VRA partners will be hosting several sessions at this year’s ITS World Congress coming up in October in Melbourne focusing on the challenges and achievements of international collaboration in a variety of topics from digital infrastructure through trilateral collaboration to certification.
SIS 20 – Evaluation and standardisation of connected and automated road transport

This SIS will allow relevant stakeholder to show different worldwide progress on connected and automated driving evaluation methodologies as well as best practices and standards that may lead for new certification schemes. The session will involve representatives from the industry, academia as well as policy makers that are involved in past and ongoing initiatives regarding the topic.
SIS 26 – Digital Infrastructure for Automated Vehicles: challenges and international collaboration

The role of Digital Infrastructure is essential in supporting the deployment of highly automated vehicles covering a wide array of activities related to aspects such as standardized representations, content types, guarantee quality, collection and minimum requirements. The focus of the session will be on how to create a Digital Infrastructure framework between public authorities and map providers including governance, role and responsibilities, roadmap towards a digital infrastructure and regulations. The issue of impact/benefits of shift of investments between roadside furniture (post signs) and digital infrastructure will be also considered in the discussion.
SIS 32 – Tri-lateral Automation in Road Transportation WG: achievements and next challenges

The European Commission (EC) (DG-CONNECT), the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Road Bureau of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan have a long history of sharing information on ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) activities. The focus of this session will showcase the activities of the tri-lateral automation working group discussing topics of accessible transportation, digital infrastructure, human factors, security, or roadworthiness testing. The session will feature relevant representatives providing presentations highlighting their point of view and then common conclusions will be drafted considering the achieved results.
SIS 33 – Deployment challenges on Automated Truck Platooning
Date: Wednesday 12 October 2016
Time: 1600 – 1730 hours
The session will present lessons learned from the European Truck Platooning Challenge which will be held on the 6th of April 2016 as part of the Dutch Presidency of the European Union will be shared, (functional) safety issues are addressed, as well as the insights and challenges from two key projects from the US on truck platooning, a vision on truck platooning from the Japanese perspective (to be confirmed) and last but not least, the challenges for deployment in Australia.
SIS46 – Certification of automated road vehicles: challenges ahead
Date: Thursday 13 October 2016
Time: 1400 – 1530 hours
This session will present the challenges for the certification of automated road vehicles focusing on both operational and infrastructural constraints and requirements along with taking into consideration the system versus device-level testing/certification. Benefits of a global testing framework for vehicle and system suppliers as well as system operators and road/transport/urban authorities will be illustrated.
