International expert organization DEKRA has laid the foundation stone for its new battery test center in Klettwitz, Germany. The world’s largest non-listed TIC supplier (testing, inspection, and certification) is investing a mid-double-digit million euro sum in the new testing and certification laboratory. From mid-2025, battery systems for electric vehicles as well as high-voltage storage systems for other applications will be thoroughly tested there.

“With the current global trends in mobility, the quantity and complexity of vehicles increase significantly, and so does the need for testing. This new battery test lab fills a gap in our portfolio to support the growing testing demand for electric vehicles. It is a crucial element and complements our portfolio for high tech automotive testing services”, says Fernando Hardasmal Barrera, Executive Vice President of the DEKRA Group and Head of the Service Division Digital & Product Solutions.
DEKRA operates a large number of highly specialized testing laboratories for automotive testing scenarios. With this network, DEKRA supports its customers worldwide in the most important target regions and is investing heavily in the expansion of its service portfolio around the automotive trends of the future, such as C2X (car-to-everything) communication, charging infrastructure, driver assistance systems (ADAS) open road services, functional safety, automotive cybersecurity, and AI. The battery laboratory ensures the highest standards in terms of safety, efficiency, and performance for next-generation batteries. At the same time, it promotes innovation across the entire spectrum of the automotive industry and underlines DEKRA’s commitment to driving sustainable mobility and smarter energy solutions worldwide.
“Putting vehicles through their paces before they hit the road is an important part of road safety and consumer protection”, said Guido Kutschera, Executive Vice President of the DEKRA Group responsible for business in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. “Our DEKRA Technology Center stands for these topics like no other site in our company. It is therefore all the more fitting that the battery test center is now also located here as an important building block for the safety of electromobility.”
The state-of-the-art test center will offer all types of battery tests under one roof from the development support, validation testing to the final certification testing phase. In addition to mechanical, performance and environmental tests, there will also be abuse tests in which batteries are subjected to loads far beyond their normal use. The safety standards at the new facility are correspondingly high. All services are offered during development as well as in the context of homologation, certification, quality assurance and market surveillance. “With the new services, DEKRA is underpinning the status of its location at the Lausitzring as one of the world’s most comprehensive and modern test centers for the automotive industry with a broad portfolio of services from a single source”, says Erik Pellmann, Head of DEKRA Automobil Test Center.
