China is one of the fastest developing countries in the world. This fast development however causes serious road transport problems such as congestion a high road accidents rate and pollution. Experiences from European countries and many European technologies can help China to tackle these problems. To strengthen cooperation between EU and China in road transport an EU-China Workshop was held on 26 October 2009 in Beijing co-organised by ERTICO coordinator of the SIMBA II project and China National Intelligent Transport Systems Centre of Engineering and Technology (ITSC) a partner of SIMBA II who is responsible for coordinating SIMBA II activities in China.

The workshop gathered key stakeholders in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services from China and Europe with the aim of discussing cooperation between China and EU in the research and development of ITS technologies and services. Such cooperation is expected to support China in its efforts to increase road safety and transport network management as well as improve levels of transport-related pollution.

The workshop was moderated by Dr Yanying Li ERTICO and was attended by ERTICO partners such as AVL List PTV and Satellic. Dr Bin Li from ITSC and Dr Yinli Chen from Tongji University summarised the outcomes of local expert meetings organised by the SIMBA II consortium. Road safety pollution vehicle electrification ITS service provision and sustainable transport planning were identified as the main areas where cooperation between EU and China can play an important role. Participants of the workshop had active and fruitful discussions on these topics. The outcomes from the discussion will be used to form R&D agenda for the European Commission.
