Organisations from France, Greece, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom were awarded for their innovative road safety practices at a recent ceremony in Brussels.
The 2015 Road Safety Awards, which acknowledge the work of organisatons dedicated to engaging in road safety and inspiring others, recognised a number of European initiatives that were carried out in the framework of the European Road Safety Charter.
These included a campaign to stop accidents at level crossings and in railway areas, and a project where volunteers and road-safety officers handed out on-the-spot prizes to young cyclists aged between 5 and 15 who wore a bike helmet.
The EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, who presented the awards to the winners, said: ‘Safe and smart road infrastructure will not be enough to stop all road deaths – but it can contribute to saving lives. Today’s winners are an important reminder of why Europe is at the forefront of road safety. Their excellent work deserves recognition. However improving safety is a shared responsibility.’
The winners were selected from 2 200 signatories of the Road Safety Charter following an evaluation made by the European Commission.
