The proposed regulation aims to increase carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions targets for new cars and vans, so as to ensure that the automotive sector contributes to the EU’s climate goals, and to stimulate innovation.

The measure, which is part of the Fit for 55 package – a set of legislative proposals to reduce the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 – should benefit citizens, consumers and the competitiveness of the EU’s automotive industry.

In June 2022, EU member states agreed on a general approach on the European Commission’s proposal setting strengthened CO2 emission performance standards for new passenger cars and new light commercial vehicles. The Council will negotiate with the European Parliament on a common agreement about the proposal with the goal of adopting EU legislation.
