The former European Commission Vice President, Jacques Barrot, died in Paris on 3 December 2014.
Mr. Barrot was a French politician, who also served as European Commissioner for Justice between 2008 and 2010, Commissioner for Transport between 2004 and 2008, and Commissioner in charge of Regional Policy in 2004. Prior to that, Mr Barrot was a minister in the governments of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and Jacques Chirac in France.
Born in France in 1937, Mr Barrot was committed to promoting the founding values of the European Union. A major project during his term as a Commissioner for Transport was the set up of the Galileo positioning system. Work on the system began a year before Barrot came to office and has developed since with the launch of the first satellite. Other important work focused on air passenger rights and the Single European Sky.
At the departure of Mr. Barrot, the ERTICO Partnership expresses its deepest sympathy to family, friends and colleagues.
