In a project that will be completed by 2020, Daimler will support Hamburg’s electrification of its urban transport, bus, and individual mobility systems and expand digital mobility platforms for this purpose.
The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Daimler AG have committed themselves to a far-reaching partnership for urban mobility. The project comprises the electrification of all areas of urban mobility in Hamburg: individual, transport, and local public transportation systems, including the electrification of the car2go fleet and cooperative projects for mobile platform solutions such as switchh and moovel. A variety of cooperative projects will be implemented in the next three years. These are the specifics of a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed today in Hamburg’s City Hall by Mayor Olaf Scholz and Klaus Entenmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler Financial Services AG.
The aim of the partnership is to forge ahead with the comprehensive expansion of electric mobility in particular, as well as digital mobility services. As part of the agreement, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg will set up a total of 1,000 publicly available charging stations for electric vehicles step by step throughout the city by 2019. It will also set up 150 charging stations at switchh points exclusively for carsharing vehicles, and it will be the first city in Germany to offer a significant number of parking spaces for carsharing and electric vehicles.
Daimler is investing €10 billion to expand its fleet of electric vehicles. Between now and 2022, the company will launch the series production of more than ten new electric vehicle models. In addition, Daimler AG is planning to electrify the smart vehicles in the car2go carsharing fleet in Hamburg step by step from mid-2018 until the end of 2019. Currently this plan applies to 400 vehicles, and that number will increase as the fleet grows. In addition, the integration of the carsharing services into the urban mobility platform switchh will be expanded so that the use of HVV (Hamburg public transport association), carsharing, and bicycle sharing can be offered to Hamburg residents from a single source in the future. The partners also plan to intensify their present cooperation within the moovel app, which enables users to search for offers from local public transportation, carsharing, taxis, bicycle sharing, and the Deutsche Bahn railroad, reserve tickets, and in most cases also pay for the tickets. The aim is to create a holistic, comprehensive, and low-emission mobility service in Hamburg. Close cooperation in other areas is also being planned.
In the context of the plan to procure only emission-free buses starting in 2020, Daimler and Hamburg emphasize that they intend to continue their joint evaluation of concepts for the use of electric buses — an activity that has been successful so far. In the area of commercial vehicles, the partners intend to cooperate closely in the vans segment (3.5 t), the truck segment (25 t), and the heavy-duty distribution segment (up to 25 t) via the Daimler divisions Mercedes-Benz Vans and Daimler Trucks, as well as Hamburg’s coordinating institutions (hySOLUTIONS and the Logistics Initiative Hamburg). These activities will also include the provision and practical testing of vehicles with electric drive from Daimler’s van and truck division.
