The 13th ITS European Congress was officially opened by Chairman of ERTICO-ITS Europe, Angelos Amditis, the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen together with the Mayor of Eindhoven, John Jorritsma. The Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans also gave an inspirational and wide ranging speech on the future of smart mobility.
Two years ago, the Netherlands was selected as the host country for this major Congress: the largest event in Europe entirely dedicated to smart mobility and the digitalization of transport. The event will take place in Brainport, a region that forms part of Europe’s technological backbone and enjoys global recognition as a centre for innovation and automotive solutions.

During the Opening Ceremony of this year’s Congress, Jacob Bangsgaard, ERTICO CEO announced a new corporate identity for this public-private partnership of 120 members. The new change reflects ERTICO’s commitment to innovation and continuing aspirations for the future of ITS and smart mobility.

To successfully achieve and implement change, ERTICO supports the latest innovations through four focus areas: Connected and Automated Driving, Urban Mobility, Clean Mobility and Transport & Logistics. On these topics, EU co-funded projects were showcased and a range of presentations and workshops hosted at the ITS European Congress in the Evoluon Exhibition Centre at the ERTICO stand (Floor 2.1). During the four-day ITS European Congress, the organisation will formally announce the launch of the ERTICO Start-up Initiative, a match-making service for Partners and Start-ups as well as the ERTICO Academy, a targeted training platform for public authorities.
In Brainport, ERTICO is supporting and promoting the FIA Smart Driving Challenge, a drive smart and sustainably competition that rewards smart, safe and environmentally-friendly driving for everyday motorists, with the top 5 smartest drivers announced in a leader board every day.
The Cities of Eindhoven and Helmond, hosting this year’s Congress, are offering delegates a range of innovative presentations at the Evoluon and 19 demonstrations showcased at three different locations: at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, at the Evoluon and ITS Corridor between the Evoluon and the Automotive Campus. The demos will include delivery drones, electric racing cars and virtual reality games. Visitors will also be able to learn more about autonomous driving, shared cars, smart traffic lights, in-car services, Adaptive Cruise Control and other driver assistance systems. There will be live demonstrations of automated vehicles, vehicles communicating with traffic lights, trial circuits with steps and trendy e-bikes.
