German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week opened a rail segment that is part of a high-speed rail line that will cut travel times between Berlin and Munich.
The 123-kilometre stretch of track, which cost €2.8 bn, runs from Leipzig and Erfurt Planning for the new segment began in 1992, two years after German reunification.
The new link will also shorten the journey time between Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main, Germany’s economic hub, by 23 minutes.
